Somesh Jha's Journalistic Work

I am a senior reporter at Bloomberg Tax, writing on UK and international taxes from London.

With more than a decade in business journalism, I have specialised in delivering groundbreaking scoops, conducting deep investigations, and covering real-time and breaking news across a range of beats.

One of my proudest achievements was scooping out the official data suppressed by the Indian government on unemployment and consumer spending in 2019.

I am also skilled in data analysis, coding, multimedia production, freedom of information requests.

I am driven by curiosity, always seeking the story behind the numbers and reading between the lines. I move fast under pressure but never compromise on accuracy.

What Others Say About My Work

His flair for investigative journalism and focus on data make his reports stand out.

His enthusiasm to break stories is as compelling as his patience to wait for facts and figures to get the big picture right.

Somesh shows amazing ingenuity to get his head around the most complicated stories, regardless of the subject matter...He made sure what we published was clear, compelling and bulletproof.

Somesh had eight years of experience, but I realised he possessed insights and contacts that were very rare in Indian journalism.

Vinod K. Jose, former Executive Editor, The Caravan

In a short period of time, and at a young age, Somesh developed a deep understanding of India’s labour market as a reporter and quickly established himself as an authority on the beat.

Latest Work

In my latest stint, I work as UK and international tax policy reporter at Bloomberg Tax. Here's some of my important work.

I cultivated boardroom-level sources to break stories in aviation, railways and banking. I analysed balance sheets, tracked regulatory developments, and chased developments behind closed doors, producing high-profile scoops. Explore some of my business reporting above.

I have reported on major cover-ups under challenging conditions. From uncovering hidden government data through deep sources to exposing interference in central bank independence via freedom of information requests, some of my award-winning work is featured above.

I began my career as a data reporter in 2013, when the beat was still niche in most newsrooms. I produced weekly economic charts and spotted emerging data trends for a leading Indian financial daily. Over the years, I've combined data literacy with visualisation skills to tell stories. Click above to explore my data work.
