Somesh Jha's Journalistic Work
Welcome to my portfolio website! Here you will find a selection of the best journalistic work that I have produced since 2013.
I am currently a senior reporter at Bloomberg Tax, writing on UK and international taxes from London.
As a business reporter for most of my journalistic career, I have specialised in delivering groundbreaking scoops, conducting deep investigative work, and covering breaking news across a range of beats.
I have broken news on bank mergers, reported on central banks, covered companies and I specialise in policy reporting. One of my proudest achievements was scooping out the official data suppressed by the Indian government on unemployment and consumer spending in 2019.
In addition to my experience writing complex economic stories, I am skilled in data coding, fact-checking, multimedia production, and freedom of information requests.
His flair for investigative journalism and focus on data make his reports stand out.
His enthusiasm to break stories is as compelling as his patience to wait for facts and figures to get the big picture right.
Somesh shows amazing ingenuity to get his head around the most complicated stories, regardless of the subject matter...He made sure that what we published was clear, compelling and bulletproof.
Somesh had eight years of experience, but I realised he possessed insights and contacts that were very rare in Indian journalism.
Somesh’s ability to go beyond the beat reporting to find information which held the powerful to account was unique and his award-winning work is a testimony to that.
I have covered a wide range of sectors as a beat reporter. My experience spans capital-intensive industries such as aviation, where I analysed airline balance sheets and reported on regulatory developments, to banking, where I broke stories on mergers and exposed bank frauds. I specialise in reporting on government policies, having covered taxation, public finance, labour, transportation, the environment, and politics. You can also find some of my latest financial journalism work above.
I have reported on some of the biggest cover-ups under tough reporting circumstances. I chase scoops through strong source-building and dig beneath the surface to spot emerging stories. From exposing hidden government data to unearthing thousands of documents through Freedom of Information requests, some of my award-winning work is featured above.
I began my career as a data reporter in 2013, when it was still a niche beat in most newsrooms. Over the years, I have combined data literacy with visualisation skills to tell impactful stories. I have experience using R for data sourcing, web scraping, cleaning, and analysis. I've worked extensively with spreadsheets, and created visualisations with Datawrapper and Flourish. This is a selection of my data journalism work.
